NEW YEAR--NOW WHAT?

Yeah its 2012-YEAH throw confetti

What are your plans? Have you begun to work on your to-do list?

Have you begun to break down the steps for you to complete one task on your to-do list?

Because with even one item it takes many steps to achieve the one goal you set forth

Goal: I want to do editorials this year How will you go about that?

Well lets break that sucker down shall we:)

You have to research magazines, photographers, stylist, hair artists and models.
You must have your presentation ready, comp cards, business cards web sites and portfolios
Evaluate where you are and be honest with yourself and that way you can know what magazines and photographers you may want to work with.. If you re just starting out and you think a realistic goal would be getting a 10 page fashion editorial spread in Vogue is what you desire you maybe smoking crack BUT getting a fashion spread in an Indie magazine may be a more realistic goal
You will have to send out many emails, mailers, and make phone calls just to make one contact
Are you familiar with some of the indie magazines--Paper, Zink, etc if not get to know them and who shoots for them
Are you testing-- how strong are the tests?

...................................................and the list of things to do goes on--you get me.

And yes, all this to get into a, one, uno magazine

You know the saying Work the Plan--always hated that saying but it is true I like "get to steppin" myself . Seriously whats your plan of action?

As this new year is already here--know that what you do this year sets you up for next year and years to follow. Be strategic with who and what you work with When you have a clear path your steps to complete them may not be so daunting and actually be almost a pleasant road to be on

In your career there will always be tremendous highs and lows--if you have a plan the lows may not take you out of the game. The lows can be mind altering but with a plan A-B or C you can navigate your way effectively.

Remember what you do now--is setting the path for your future. Oh and by the way, as a freelancer you never wait for a new year to start making plans --your plans are never ending.

What path will you be on?

I have been so wrong people--wrong!

I have not posted a thing about this phenomenal site for the professional makeup artists and you know how much I love to share with you all. REALLY-where the hell is your site?

Right now I am working on over 50 makeup looks for a show I'm beauty director for. The Cotton 24 Hour Fashion show--that taking place in Miami in a few weeks AND you know what keeps screaming in my head--you guys, (newbies not so newbies who for whatever reasons who don't have a website)

Where the hell is your site?

Being a beauty director for a fashion show is more then face charts and picking lip colors its hiring the crew, runners, dealing with multiple people behind the scenes to ensure all goes well. This time I found my job way more difficult then it needed to be. WHY, because I had makeup artists wanting to be on the team but had nothing to show me. In this day of Internet websites popping up all over the place in various designs and cost I am baffled as to why you do not have a site

If you have 1 good picture--you should have a site

Why?

Because how else will the people that hire know what it is you are capable of doing. Don't be intimidated by the fact that you're new or that you may feel your work isn't up to the standards you have been looking at on other sites Don't block people who are in the position to hire you--hire you

My dilemma was on-going--I want to apply for the position you posted DeShawn but I don't have a site. SO how the heck can I even hire you site unseen?(every pun intended) Does that make any sense? We are in a visual business people where looks are paramount on all levels. Am I to take your word that you can do the job? Sorry to say NO.

I found myself in the position of having to say no , having to replace people with folks who actually allowed me to view their work

On the flip side
Don't think we cannot see through a site. By that I mean, we see bad makeup, bad hair models and photography. No matter how glossy and flashy your site is, No matter how loud your music blares in the background about how fabulous you are we see you for who you are. If your makeup is bad there isn't any amount of flash or catchy phrases etc that can cover that up. So flashy self proclaimed excellence when your work is sub pare doesn't work.

For me what works is total honesty about who you are as an artist. Not the flashy sites.
I will definitely go into more details about sites later--promise

So getting back to the 1(one) lonely photo you may have on your site--not to worry. You then will have a Bio section and its there for you tell the truth--( raise your hand) nothing but the whole truth so help you God Use the Bio to explain your background-are you new--say so, and then tell us what it is you can do for us -- are you willing to assist, are you willing to test etc. Then put your number on there and send it out

BUT DeShawn I only have one pic--are you crazy? I started with one--and I shoved that down every ones throat, hahahah I really did. Then because I was so pushy I had 2 and so on. At the time I was starting in fashion the sites weren't so plentiful. So all I had was Outlook, a mini bio and a letter saying I want to work with you and here's why you must work with me I was a little cocky back then and yes I only had a few pics. I wasn't going to miss out on opportunities because I'd see that so and so had far better shots then me better models then me etc I wasn't concerned because I was new and in reality couldn't compete with those artists if I tried AND I knew I wouldn't fool a soul if I had gotten a flashy site for my one pic.

So the next time you see an opportunity as my dear Auntie Pattie say (no sh'e not really my aunt)--That's Patti LaBelle (I know shameless plug hehehehe) As she says and a motto I really and truly live by "DON'T BLOCK THE BLESSINGS" meaning if all you needed was a site to show your work--then why not have one.

It really broke my heart to have to say no to people I knew really wanted to work the gig but without anything to show--how in the world could I hire them---WOULD YOU?

What to do

Go on the Internet do a search for on-line portfolios and then do your homework
Determine what it is you need at this time
Ask questions like, can I upgrade to a bigger site when I need to
Can I customize the site for myself down the line
How flexible is the site--can I upload my own pics--if not I'd pass on the site
How expensive is it--the cost can be nominal as little as $20 per month on up
Make sure the site is easy for you to understand--does it have a good customer service rep, does it have online help etc--that's very important
Don't forget about obtaining your domain name--what are you calling your site
Go to godaddy.com always a great domain site for you to use

Ohhh and BTW, Facebook pages that's not a FAN page or solely a professional page (no personal pics) will not ever substitute for a website--NEVER EVER!

Do your homework when it comes to sites

PORTFOLIO DEVELOPING WORKSHOP--I've got a question for you

Hi everyone

After writing about Portfolios I was thinking wouldn't it be great to actually have a workshop that could go along with it. Then I think the Lord heard me-- and a few weeks later my friend contacted me to let me know she is back in the states. She was a portfolio developer for some of THE highest and mean highest photographers, makeup hair and styling talents we have here. She's not an agent--she is the one that agents go to. Shes truthful, thoughtful and just fabulous at what she does. I asked her if she'd be interested in doing a workshop and she said sure--so yeah for us all.

So I pose the question to you

How many of you would be interested in taking a Portfolio Development workshop in August on a Saturday located at my studio --Studio D in Brooklyn? Date to be determined

I am not into wasting your time nor mine and would never have a workshop/classes that I do not believe would be beneficial to all my fab readers So, If the response is a good one I will be posting the info for the class by Monday --if not you guys will be missing out. She is only in NYC once a year.

PORTFOLIOS-OY VEY

Sitting here tonight looking at all my new work and the magazines I have piled up on the desk I'm exhausted by the thought of organizing all of this. So instead I decided to write this blog entry a very convenient distraction this blog can be :) I share my pain with you in hopes you'll learn something and I get motivated to start working on the pile :)

How many of you keep up with your portfolios?

When was the last time you added a photo to your book?

When was the last time you’ve even looked at it?

For me, truth be told it has been a very very long time, and really people that’s not good

I am what can be called a fortunate makeup artist. I rarely have to show my book any longer. When asked about my work I just say “oh you can go to my website.” And while that has paid off well for me there are times when –as of late I’ve found myself in a massive bind. Lately I have been asked to show my book and as unprepared as I am to show it I manage to get the job. I do have a spare one set aside but one must always tailor the book to the job—see below. I don’t want you guys to be like me –cramming the night before to find photos and tears of your work only to be on the train or in a cab to your interview rearranging your photos in a frenzy—oy vey. That’s is no way for a makeup artist to live.

So as I write this I am not only talking to you I am definitely talking to myself

You should always have a portfolio on hand to show your work
It must be Up-to-date—meaning the pictures themselves don’t look dated. Unless you have work of Linda Evangelista Naomi and Cindy from days gone by trendy circa 1990’s can look old and weigh your book down Trendy circa 2002 can take your book into a time warp as well. Keep your book fresh and current. A lot of times that can mean beauty photos (clean crisp beauty photos), nothing to overtly show the time we are in. I refer to these as classics. I have a lot of classics in my book thank God and find them to be very easy to mix in with my new current things as well

PREPARATION/maintaining

As you get work maintain your files—meaning don’t let the magazines or test pile up on your computer and on your desk. Print out the photos or pull the tears out of the magazine and file them away. That way when you get the call they will be at hand—not stacked 4 feet high on your desk—(that was a note to self --ugh)

As for your book you should always be sure your acetate sleeves are clean and not scratched, or fingerprinted to death. This just looks tacky—and presentation is very very important

And be sure the page liner—the page that goes between the acetate is fresh and clean as well—no dog-earred corners, or tears. If any of this is the case in your books then replace them immediately

ACETATE are the plastic photo holders that are inside the portfolio—looks like giant sheet protectors for loose-leaf binders

Tearsheets should always be neatly trimmed on the ends where the magazine was ripped to remove the pic. You can use a paper cutter for this. I myself use a large piece of wood a T-square and an exacto knife to keep my edges crisp and straight

TEARSHEETS and or TEARS-are the fabulous editorial magazines stories you will have.

Tears should not be worn, torn or faded. If they are faded you can try going to Kinkos and making a copy of it and increasing the contrast on the color printer and hopefully your photo will come back to life

The best thing I had ever learned was to never put originals inside my portfolio. On the off chance they lose your book—they are not stocked with the only print you have. I live in Staples on 42^nd street—they have the best color copiers in the business. Great for all the 8 ½ by 11 tears—not so great for larger like 9x12 (unless you shrink them to 8 ½ x 11) I always go with a pile of magazines and do all my cutting and copying there when I can

Always put in copies never originals. File the originals away preferably in a dark area and in an archival binder

And if you can afford it I would also suggest printing out more then one copy of the photos you get from a test. (The best photos not ever single one of them) You never know what can happen to the disk or hard drive for that matter. For me my system crashed and I was dying because I could not retrieve all of my photos. I have my pictures on several different hard drives now—never relying on just one.

MAKE MORE THEN ONE COPY PEOPLE

Your book—portfolio should be in great condition as well

No funkiness with the binding or the covers—everything should be clean and neat

I think of it as my Sunday going to church coat when I was a kid—that sucker was always so fresh.

PORTFOLIO BASICS

Portfolio basics and I mean basic—in-depth will be on an individual basis

You can go crazy with your books—I’ve seen some very very beautiful off the beaten path ones. Different colors interiors, etc. Those cost big bucks. Unless you have high quality photos to put inside I would suggest sticking with a Black leather or Wax Skin

INDUSTRY STANDARD

Color should be BLACK

Standard Size-9x12 or 11x14

Acetate for me I like the top and bottom to be open

Page insert-I like black

To help you choose between leather or waxskin

Leather $245 Waxskin $130 (according to House of Portfolio NYC)

I have a few black waxskins myself and a few metal—stick with waxskin

Average cost for everything when it comes to your book should be approx $250-350--yes that's one book

IT’S IN THE BAG—oppps almost forgot

One other additional cost would be the actual bag you carry it in--NO it shouldn’t just go inside your own purse. It should have its own carrying bag—one with your name and address/contact info on it. When you leave behind your book and you will have to at some point it should be left in its own carrying bag. Cost for these can run $75 and up

If you find a sale it may be cheaper

OPTIONS

There are endless options for your book—one of the most common ones, the inner pocket on the back inside cover. I think this is important—some books don’t have this and yours should. It’s a place to store your comp cards and a few and I mean a few other pictures. I have seen some artist try and cram over 20 pics in the back pocket. A few pics in the pocket perhaps 3-5 and that’s it. That pocket should really be reserved for your comp card and resume or bio

LABEL MAKER

Your name should appear on the inside front cover of your book—that way they know whose book it is to return it. Be sure to print out a lovely label with your name address and number on it. How will they be able to find you for that job.

NUMBER OF PHOTOS

How many photos in a book depends on where you are in your career and what it is you’re trying to accomplish. Seasoned artist can have 50 or more in a book. Newbies 5-10 I think is good start—no more. BTW that’s 5-10 of your best work--I’m talking about your very best work. Hair Makeup Styling Photography Model and retouching are on point—if there’s something wrong with the picture then don’t use it. This is your book that will represent you.

When showing your book no one wants to hear you give commentary about how you love the makeup but the photographer was whack, or how “yeah I hated the hair in this pic too” Not a good impression—don’t you agree I cannot tell you how many times I have heard the above from various artists when critiquing books. The funny things is artist know when there's something wrong with the picture--most choose to either ignore it or try and explain it away that doesn't work. Its not about the quantity but about the quality. As a newbie it takes time for you to build a dynamic team for the shots that will land you and agent.

SAY YOUR NAME

In this case put that sucker on your book—loud and proud. The cost for custom logos definitely make the book go up in cost—something to think about. THE NAME must be imprinted, embossed on the front cover of your book. For the fancy it could be off-centered or on the binder, etc—again extra cost.

RULE OF THUMB

Books are to be tailored to what the job is you’re going for. If it’s a beauty campaign for Neutrogena facial wash, don’t have just your avante-garde fuschia eye and purple lip makeup Another example: there's a photographer you have wanted to shoot with he shoots clean natural beauty--don't load the book with funky makeup. Remember you are trying to appeal to their estatics to choose you. For all my corporate america people out there. Think of the Portfolio as your resume. In our world we tailored our resume to fit the position we were applying for by changing keys word, and positioning and highlighting our attributes

You showed your web/portfolio and you are asked to assist

Don’t be surprise if you never touch a model—remember it is not your job

Sometimes Keys want to see what you are capable of. By reviewing and approving you as an assistant there is no guarantee you will actually be working on a model, actor etc

I was on set all day and all I did was clean brushes—I’m super bummed

Well if this is your attitude then all you will do is clean brushes

Assisting is not just about makeup—it’s about the surroundings, the goings on

It’s a lesson in how to interact with photographer styling etc. It is a visual reward to you for assisting. You are to learn from what you observe—store it in your mind and use it for you when you are dealing with photographers, and team

You asked ME to assist YOU so therefore you need my talents or you would not have requested ME

Please understand the Key makeup artists will ask you to assist for various reasons—unto themselves that is not obvious to you. They may take a liking to you and want to offer you a learning experience, or they may want you there to clean their brushes or they may want you there just to make themselves look good. All the above can happen. Know that its not always about how you beat a face

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE’S NO PAY?

Yep you heard it here people—most assisting gigs are no pay—unless stated up front by your Key. Why? Now that’s a good question, as previously stated you are getting a learning experience that would be worth more then the $50 you may get. Now that is not to say all gigs are not paying. Depending upon the budget—there maybe a budget for an assistant, so yeah right, but when there isn’t you will probably not get paid. I cannot stress this enough there is a wealth of knowledge on set you cannot get from reading a book or for that matter taking a class. One of my very first experiences was being an assistant at the time for one of THE top makeup artists (the lovely Miss Sharon) on a David La Chapelle set. Nope I got nothing, but what I took away from my time on set -- priceless

The “Key” said I would be doing makeup but I didn’t—wtf?

Things can change at a drop of the dime, there maybe one less model, or the makeup style has changed or after considering the situation the “key” felt it was more important for them to do all the makeup. Your job is still to assist and to do what is asked of you Some keys may explain the situation to you others may not—just be prepared to be the best assistant

I was told not to speak to anyone or give out my business cards—how am I going to make connections?

YOU’RE NOT! You are there to assist, not build your contact list. As for talking to people the only person you should be talking to that day is the Key. On set there are ton of dynamics that can change at any moment. What was fine just a minute ago is now taboo. By talking to people or carrying on an “innocent” conversation can throw off the whole dynamics. They may think your “Key” must not be that great if he/she cannot control their staff, or the Key has a lazy attitude when it comes to set etiquette. Perhaps they’re talking to you to get information from you about the Key—you never know. Until it is otherwise mentioned to you—keep your mouth shut and direct all questions to the Key unless told the contrary. Passing out your card is just ethically a big no no. Why? Because the Key has you on set to assist on his/her job. These are their clients not yours, there will be plenty of time for you to develop your own list of clients. Artist who do this do not last very long

Summing it up

Coming from the Key’s perspective to sum this up in terms many of you can understand. Think of the client as your boyfriend or girlfriend. Think of your assistant as your BFF. Now picture your best friend going behind your back and hooking up with your significant other. Now I ask you is that cool?

Welcome to the world of assisting. Assisting is not just about makeup—you are there to keep the Key artist working and make their day go smoothly. You maybe asked to get coffee, go to the store, clean out their kit bags, walk their dog, get them food etc. I myself wound up babysitting and doing everything else I had to do—and I did it with a smile The Key can’t leave, they must stay on set for the duration of the shoot. So by going to the store etc., you are helping the shoot go smoothly. And to the many of my assistants who have remembered just how I like my lattes—I love you all

A LIFE LESSON

When I first started in fashion I would send out my photos to anyone and everyone who I thought would be kind enough to impart some of their wisdom upon me. In a 6 month period I’d send out over 1000 emails with my precious photos attached hoping for some guidance. Out of over 1000 emails I received about .2% return on my investment of time. I even got a response from Michael Jackson makeup artist—(rest in peace Michael). Most of them saying—good work just keep doing what you’re doing. HUH?—keep doing what I’m doing— hhhmmmm I’m perplexed--I don’t have a clue what I am doing I'm a newbie. At least I know I’m doing something right—right?

Until one day I actually got a meeting with a photographer I admired. I met him at a restaurant down in Battery Park City—I was working a regular job at the time I was in transition from film to fashion. I proudly presented pics I had-(not in a portfolio either). I was so thrilled to have someone there to finally talk to about my new venture. I started out with a few pics of the only produced photo shoot I had done at the time. --- Wooooo I was nervous people. He looked at my favorite one—and said point-blank. “I don’t like that” I was shocked—crushed and embarrassed. What? How could he not like it? It was my crowning glory—a beauty shot to rival all beauty shots. OMG I can’t do makeup—I must suck—I thought to myself. I was ready to turn tail and run. BUT then something said—go on DeShawn get bold—ask him why. So I did, all the time waiting for the fatal blow of—“your makeup really sucks.” His reply was—I don’t like the fact I can see up her nose. HUH? What? —You don’t like the shot because of the angle? BUT I’m here for a review of makeup? My actual reply was –Ohhhhhh? He said -- I can see you’re makeup is great but man I hate those up the nose shots. It stopped him cold. He gave me some pointers on what I can do on my next few shoots, and when I had those done—give him a call. Now that was something I could totally understand. Though I appreciated the encouraging words from previous artists, he gave me somethings to work on (like attention to backgrounds, model positions, stray hairs, retouching and yes the up-your-nose angle)– Thats what I call my homework. I love homework. Had I not asked him why I would have perhaps left the business—and second-guessed my whole career change.

One day while assisting Sharon Gualt on all things a David LaChapelle shoot, really not too far after my meeting with the photographer previously mentioned—yes another long story J. It was lunchtime and I found myself a seat away from David—shine the light on me. I was eavesdropping, David was going on and on about certain magazines that were left on the table. He’d flip through them and then commented on them being SH…--well let’s just say he didn’t like them. Earlier I had looked through those same magazines dreaming of the day I would be in there and thinking everything was just fabulous. So I couldn’t understand what was so wrong.

Me being a total newbie (I was less then 5 months in fashion) I dared ask a question to him (not something I’d recommend). He replied rather sternly—as he picked up one of the magazines and said to me— LOOK, that lighting is horrible, he flipped a few pages, LOOK at this model she has no real expression, and on and on. YOU’VE GOT TO LEARN WHAT IS A GOOD PHOTO! He then slammed the magazines down and in only a DLC way he left the table without a word. I almost peed in my pants-LOL. In that 2 minute conversation and a rare DLC act of kindness to a newbie (well sort of), as well as the brutally honest photographer before him— I received some of the most valuable lessons I ever have in this business.

Those life’s lessons I never ever forgot and I keep with me everyday. I am so grateful to have them. I share them with you:

It’s not all about your makeup
You must pay attention to every detail in the photo
You must pay attention to every detail in your photo shoots
You must surround yourself with the most excellent team you can
You must learn as much as you can about other details other then makeup
Remember when seeking advice the critics are drawn to what it is they do first—and then look at the peripherals later i.e. makeup artists always look at makeup first etc.
Never take anything personally
Don’t be afraid to ask a question—well unless its to David LaChapelle

I continue to do my homework—study greats, arts, photography makeup etc. I’m sure some of you are wondering if I ever shot with that photographer—the answer is no. BUT years later I got a call while on set working on a fashion editorial for Ocean Drive magazine. It was the photographer who didn’t like my up-your-nose shot—asking me if I was available for a shoot with him. I wasn’t I was booked--BUT I thanked him for being so honest with me that day. I told him I never forgot him and was grateful for everything.

Ahhhh a life lesson—don’t you love them?

I love NYC during Fashion Week--there's a funky pulse in the city that gets my heart beating a little faster. What really sets me off are seeing the models walk through the city. Its like Fleet week in NYC except there are hundreds of models-- (Its like invasion of the 50 foot woman--they're every where), seeing people pull out their best outfits as they head off to one show after another, or watching my fellow makeup and hair people (more then normal) walk through the city with their kits. Its also the time, I, black gurl can get a damn cab--without worry

The other things I love are the off-the-beaten path shows--off-broadway I'd like to say. Those rouge designers who dare not take a tent and branch out on their own. One of those Maverick-y kind of people is designer Leila Shams. She comes from Brooklyn with her one of a kind flavor--shes a trend setter. I'm all about different and she is the D- difference in Designer Her clients range from Lindsay Lohen, Ke$ha, Keri Helson

I had the opportunity to key her Fall 2011 show. It was held at the legendary Chelsea Hotel NYC off the beaten path. One of my favorite things about working with her is, she loves makeup. Makeup makeup makeup--she's not afraid of it taking over her designs. Leila finds it compliments so this makeup artist was happy to oblige being Key Makeup Artist

Her clothes were deep purples greens, blues with accents of gold. The fashions were funky, deep dark and mysterious. For makeup we went Glam Goth--dark sexy makeup. We are talking purple lips & purple eyes. To top it off it was held in the basement of the Chelsea Hotel a very cool dark section were all the parties happen.

The models were standing--not walking and for 2 hours guesst came and went and they were still standing there in all their fabulousness--and yes the makeup held up

Overall clean up the face
Purple In the crease and under the eye
Lined in heavy black liner

Shimmer was applied to the apples of the cheeks and slightly L shaped to the brow bone
Lips was a mixture of a shimmery pigment and clear lipgloss and a Shimmer lighter purple in the center

What I was going after was the "rockstar" out on the town--wearing her favorite Leila Shams outfit

A TRIBUTE TO COCO ala Black Men Magazine

When I got the call I'd be working with Coco--I was like Mrs. Ice Tea. Well after meeting her and working with her a few times I think of her as COCO--alone and singular. She is her own women with a business-sense and lets face it a fabulous body. Then enters her sister Kristy and well you have two really fab ladies I had the pleasure of doing their makeup. The one and only Q did the hair. It was so refreshing to see two sisters who loved each other and got a long so well. Kristy isn't a model, Coco wanted to showcase her beautiful sister along with her in this well over 15 page magazine spread. It was a long two days but Coco & Kristy and Ice made those days just fly by.

The shoot spans two different styles--one a more futuristic style on the back of the real Batman motorcycle--that came with its own security. That day was crazed, shooting on a soundstage and having so many people on set--I'd say well over 50 people All the while the ladies were just doing their thing. Day 2 was a period burlesque style shoot inside studio with a smaller crew and more fun.

Lady Sings the Blues- A New Dawn

When you have the ability to work with a celebrity once and you really just loved working with them—the memory and experience is always a happy one. BUT when you get the opportunity to work with them again it is even sweeter. I am talking about the one and only Diddy Dirty Money lady Miss Dawn Richard. Now you all know how much I just adore her—well this photoshoot just elevated her in my mind. This fabulous singer songwriter wanted to channel the spirit of the past—and she did yall. She seamlessly became a—“Lady sings the blues-Josephine Baker” performer. She was transformed and we all went along for the journey. Ms Richard who we all know is a fab hip-hop singer is now a 1920’s cabaret singer. What fun!!!! I am truly a blessed black gurl and makeup artist to work with someone with such range and courage. I do believe there’s something in that Louisana water—cause all the folks I’ve had the pleasure of meeting from there has a spirit that cannot be broken—and a love that shines on everyone in their presence. GRAND CENTRAL-A LIFE LESSON

The history of Grand Central is amazing--it is truly one of my all time favorite places in NYC. Before the 50s and beyond it had such an illustrious era. Major, major movies stars, our fearless soldiers, Politicians etc., would use the railway as their main passage. Then in the 60's it began to fall on hard times. The homeless had taken over in the 70’s, and developers wanted to knock down Grand Central for yet another grandiose—probably very ugly office building. Grand Central was sick and it was a clear reflection on how NYC was feeling at the time. Then came along Jackie Kennedy Onassis and a team of very devoted New Yorkers to fight to keep and restore Grand Central to what it is today.

During some of the reconstruction in the 90's I worked in the area. I would look out the window on to Vanderbilt Avenue to see the new equipment coming into the station--wondering where it was going. I would even be so brazen to go down on my lunch break and sneak into restricted areas just to see the progress. It took years just to wipe down the ceiling in the main concourse (by hand) and restore it back to its original state (and yes I witnessed that too). When it finally was unveiled I was there—beaming with pride as if I had something to do with it.

I know you didn’t need a history lesson on Grand Central but the parallel for all of us trying to make a way is so spot-on. Without the advocacy from Jackie Kennedy O’Nassis and others Grand Central would not be here. Without the talented crew and craftsmen, it would have never been restored to its former glory, and without the patients, perseverance and attention to detail it would not have kept its shine as brightly as it does today

In 2006, I was standing in Grand Central looking up at the ceiling in the main concourse working as a makeup artist shooting an advertisement. Overwhelmed, trying desperately not to cry due to the Odyssey I had been through to be standing there--I was truly feeling like a blessed black gurl. For me, the moment was awe-inspiring and the memory still is a powerful life lesson. To be working in Grand Central for this New Yorker was remarkable. It was also the day I was informed I had just gotten the cover a Zink--double thrill!

As a makeup artist, no matter if you’re new or seasoned, look to those attributes it took for the successful restoration of Grand Central and apply them to your life. We cannot get to any point of success without the help of others, we cannot make it through without a tenacious nature, we must nurture our craft and we must never give up on our dreams. That’s the lessons I get every single time I walk through Grand Central. Find something you can marvel in, something or someone to inspire you even when you’re so down you don’t realize its affects on you. For some it's Oprah for me its Grand Central though she’s a close second :)

It’s the end of the day and youre leaving your job for a party--why do you have to do a whole new face of makeup. When its time for a party think ahead when applying your daytime makeup, that will give you a great base for evening. For day: a great foundations and powder job will seal the deal and a clean sexy look for the office a little shimmer, some eyeshadow etc will help make your transition into night take you 5 minutes. So now its time to head to the ladies room and get ready for the office party and “Voila” within a matter of 5 minutes you’ve changed your look. I came up with this when I worked in corporate america. After I had done all the girls makeup for our night out I had 5 minutes to do my own, normally in the dark and in the back of the cab-hahaha

Pull out that jumbo pencil (BTW doesn’t have to be black) and line the top lid, smudge up and out ( don't go above the crease)—this creates a gradient effect on the eye. Were not trying to fill the whole lid with color. Then add a little on the bottom lash line—(I say a little ladies) smudge

Color combinations you can try--Green Eyes try purple, Blue Eyes I suggest a rich cognac-y brown, Brown Eyes --your guys are lucky, colors just look great around your eyes--no matter what I happen to like a smokey blue or grey

THE LOOK-

(BTW nothing changed except her eye makeup)

Here all I did was smoke out the eyes--brown/black on top and a brown/cognac color with a hint of purple was applied on the bottom. To make this look easy I suggest buying a fabulous jumbo eyeshadow pencil, lining all around the eye. I kept the concentration of color to the outer corners of the eyes. Notice the water line is lined in white pencil, but you just as easily can add black brown etc for that extra smokey look. Curl lashes and give it an extra coat of mascara and the whole look changes. To polish off the look add more shimmer to the t-zone (with a shimmer jumbo pencil), lip gloss and blot you're done 5 MINUTES

Do a practice run and see how fast you can do this look--and have fun trying

I remember starting out in the industry like it was yesterday. I knew no one, I just left Corporate America, and to make matters worse I just couldn't get a straight answer. This business is confusing, it has many people who offer only slight info to get you hooked and then you pay crazy money just to find out one question. I've been there--Ive been suckered and I have learned. I answer as many questions as I could throughout the years--because any knowledge I feel I can pass on will only be beneficial as you proceed with your journey. Be prepare, I am very very truthful, I do not sugar-coat answers. I will be answering a few questions a month.

Criteria for question--please keep it to the industry or an issue only i.e (how to assist, how to work with photographers etc. You never know you might get me to writing a very informative blog entry :)

COCO+BREEZY, TEYANA TAYLOR, Me, Ugo, Sarah and 3 boys from France

The other day I got the opportunity to work with two enterprising--entrepreneurial sisters. I mean "sisters" the fabulous twins that make up the design duo COCO&BREEZY. OK at first I was like who are these beautiful young ladies walking into my studio, Studio D in Brooklyn (wink). I thought they were models. Long lean and possessing a fabulous sense of self and style. They are fierce-people. Hailing from the cold-ass state of Minnesota they are here in NYC doing their thing designing rings, necklaces, and yes those famous shades that Nicki Manij , Ciara, Kelly Osborne, Serena Williams, Dawn Richard all love--and their list goes on

The have a retro cool vibe reminiscent of the 80"s but then at closer inspection it screams of a style more present and beyond. I knew right away the first thing I wanted to do for makeup was two totally opposite looks but with color. I told them my ideas and they loved it. Thank God they were cool twins who don't have to be alike all the time. I really like these young ladies--well I like anyone who keeps it moving--you know. They are proactive in every sense of the word.

The very funky work of NOUS SOMMES

On that very loud and funky Sunday--with way too many people in my studio--(over 50). In the mist of the crowd and chaos was talented fab photographer Sarah McColgan doing her thing. If you don't know who she is--well I probably will devote an entry to her work and my absolute love of her. She's like family and has shot some A-List people-like Beyonce, Heidi Klum, Jezzy, Nicki Manij her list just goes off the page. She did her thing with gels--(plastic colored strips put over the lighting to create a funky effect--like adding a more saturated color)

Also at Studio D there was three boys from France who designed "Nous Sommes" another funky jewelry line. Face pendants of famous people that were amazing--and I sooooo wanted one, especially the Grace Jones--hint hint :) I had fun using my very broken French to try and communicate with them--it wasn't good hahahaha but they were sweet. At least one of them spoke English and had the patience to listen to my many failed attempts.

On the fabulous side there was fashion stylist Ugo Munzie doing his thing as usual. The thing about Ugo I love is he always manages to pull clothes that allow the artist to be who they are and who they'd like to be. Never over-powering in his own personal style, he's just straight forward decisive, talented and a joy--love him His assistant Devar--welllll people, he's beyond Fab-u-lous. As a team we all connect on look and style--we all get each other and that just makes my day.

Later in the day in walks Miss TEYANA TAYLOR--she's currently on Kwanye's latest cd. She went to hair first working with hair artist Mathew, while I worked on Coco and Breezy When she finally got in my chair I was like--hhhhmmmmmm??? I like her but she was very quiet and reserved--all the things I'm not -lol She was quiet and tired-people. I didn't know she's in from L.A. and on a press tour. She is another hard-working young lady--who definitely keeps it moving. She was being featured in the Nous Sommes ad campaign as well as some publicity photos. By the end of the day I wanted her to be my little sister.

The "Look" for Teyana was more soft--I just wanted her features to shine--not crazy color or pattern. So earth-tones was the way I wanted to go ala DeShawn. She has an amazing spirit, tenacious attitude, she's smart, talented-- and well, beauty is obvious. No one puts this baby in the corner, I can tell you that. And to make it even better I got to meet her mom (with a fresh and fabulous new hair cut) She is just as beautiful and amazing as her daughter I could clearly see where Teyana gets it all. Miss Taylor came with MTV in tow recording the events of the day along with more magazine people, more press people streaming in and out of STUDIO D. At the end of the day--it turned out to be such a lovely--(long-ass) but lovely day. I got to meet some new people--who left wonderful and funny memories with me I will have for the rest of my days

Oh and how in the world could I forget--this day would not have been complete, without my two assistants Miss Mahogany and Miss Celine----THANK YOU LADIES

When I got the call that I "might" be working with legendary

Academy Award nominee actress Annette Benning, for a minute

I stopped breathing. It would be my brush with Hollywood royalty.

Now normally I am not starstruck but the movie she made with her

husband another Hollywood legend Warren Beatty is one of

my favorite movies of all time. If you've never seen Bugsey (circa 1991) you

are truly missing a magnificent performance from the both of them.

They rank right up there with my ultra legend Bette Davis with Bugsey

(and I must say you really can't get much higher then Ms Davis)

BUT I digress....

After much scrutiny and much approval back and forth I was the one.

Let the trumpets sound!--

the announcer now says in a British accent

I cascade down the steps into Hollywood

royalty--do I curtsy, kiss her hand, do I dare look at her in the eyes?

What does this black gurl do?

The day is here, all these things are running through my mind

as I wait in the lobby of her hotel. Bottom line DeShawn, don't make

an ass out of yourself-duh AND whatever you do, don't go on and on about

Bugsey or her fabulous role in American Beauty--in which I feel she was robbed of her Oscar (sorry for the Rachel inspired Glee run-on sentence)

Its my turn to go up and I'm just trying to breathe.

I get to the suite and she greets me with a very warm hello

and off we were to get her makeup done. She was normal people, not only normal, pleasant, funny, charming and just a nice person. To make the day doubly magnificent Warren Beatty walks into the room and says Hi I'm Warren shakes my hand and asked me "what's your name?" I die! If you've never seen a Warren Beatty movie when he was wee-bit younger ladies--OMG stunning (hello, Bonnie and Clyde) and he just shook my hand- I'm melting I know, DeShawn you're a crackhead lol

Now, I do realize they are human beings who put

their pants on the same as I, but dealing with some folks who have been in the

business for 2 seconds on a reality show/game show etc., they expect the moon

to shine when the sun is out. The want royalty treatment and can be downright

rude and vulgar if they do not get their way. NOT ALL but A LOT

It is always amazing to me when I do get the opportunities

to meet such wonderful actors, singers, etc who have been around for years,

paid their dues, learned their craft, they have been nothing but gracious.

I made-up Annette for a lovely award ceremony they were honoring

her for all of her hard work. She wanted simple pretty makeup

She didn't want fanfare, she didn't have crazy gowns and stylists

She was just honored to be honored

I share with you three examples of life as a makeup artist

and some of the situations we can go through.
Little pet-peeves of mine that I have experienced
over the years and some ways for you
to navigate your way through the "BULL$SH!T."

BS# 1
When a photographer hasn’t given you your photos in a timely manner and then gets annoyed with you for asking
Sometimes you will get stiffed--sorry but that is life. To help you not get stiffed here are a few suggestions: When you get a gig with a photographer make plans to receive pics at the end of the shoot. Bring a hard drive with you, or a dvd so the photographer can upload. If they want to select photos and retouch for you set an acceptable date (1 - 2 weeks at the most) for you to pick-up the images and stick to it. If you cannot pick-up be sure to give them a postage paid envelope with cardboard to deliver your photos/dvd in the mail--you might want to spring for FedX. Keep in mind you're not the only artist they are working with so patience is appreciated

BS#2
When a potential client calls you about a job—but refuses to send you details in writing
In this day and age of everything in writing (texting, tweeting, emails)--there is no reason for any potential client not to send you the specifics of your job--especially money. BEWARE--These are normally shady folks who will say one thing to you and then the outcome will not be what was promised GET IT IN WRITING!

When you show up on set and the stylist wants to dictate every move you make

I had experienced this a lot when I first started--just take your direction from the photographer Photoshoots are a collaboration--not a dictatorship from anyone on set You should always check with the photographer to see what their vision for the shoot is and then you can bring in the whole styling team to discuss each look further. Always check with the photographer.

I get a call from my darling Kevin--Kevin James Bennett that is :) to get my butt over to the grand opening of CYNDE WATSON new cosmetics line "COLOR BY CYNDE WATSON" at the Georgia Salon in lower Manhattan. Of course, when he calls I listen, I knew it had to be great and it was. The place was packed, and all eyes on the new products Cynde has to offer. It wasn't long before Kevin and I were taking over the makeup stations Cynde had set up for her guest. We grabbed everything we could and of course, play time ensued.–-we were totally in the way like two kids at Toys R Us

So what were we marveling over? Ill tell you about a few of my favorite things. She has foundations in pencil form that blends beautifully and go on smoothly. They come in 6 shades blendable and buildable colors from the fair complexions like Nicole Kidman all the way to the beautiful chocolate of Serena Williams. I cannot say it enough I love a line that goes from the ligth to dark–its tells me the company is thinking of everyone and that is a line I will always support. The other favorite would be the Corrector and Concealer pencils (6 shades) --talk about getting ride of dark circles under the eye, and all within a few stokes. Both these pencils let you put your makeup exactly where you want it to. We also played with the eye pencils as well--talk about beautiful coverage and WOW color. I used a beautiful dark blue color on my eyes and created a smokey eye within minutes and I will say it stayed on all night--love it

After Kevin and I finsihed playing--really we would have played all night but the makeup artist wanted her spot back --lol I got to meet some other artists--one of them Sam Fine and yes he is every bit his last name ladies. We finally caught up--much emailing between us. We are both Brooklyn-nites and quickly realized we are neighbors. Be on the lookout with more on the "Fine" one coming to STUDIO D and this blog in the near future I also hope to have a special showing of Color by Cynde Watson at Studio D-fingers crossed;)

DAWNING OF A NEW DAY-DAWN RICHARD PHOTOSHOOT

I had the pleasure of working with Miss Dawn Richard at my studio, Studio D in Brooklyn this summer. We were doing an editorial spread and cover for GHUBAR Magazine. Ill let you in on a little secret, not all encounters with celebrities leave you uplifted and happy. Sometimes it can be the most trying day of you damn career. In some instances, but for me working with Dawn was a pure joy–it was indeed a dawning of a new day. When I tell you lovely–I mean “lovely”. She was tired she’d been all around the country performing one of my favorite summer songs “Hello Good Morning”and in fact later that afternoon she would be off to Paris to perform with Diddy, Nicky Minaj, and the rest of the duo that makes up Diddy-Dirty Money.

Dawn was a dream client in every way–she was trusting, she just let folks do their job–and this makeup artist so appreciated the trust. Not because I got to go crazy but having the celebrity trust you enough to just let you do your job is a luxury. Of course we discussed what she was looking for and her preferences but in the end it was a lovely collaboration between celebrity and artist and she loved it. Dawn loved the bronze lip I gave her using Make Up Forever’s aqua cream in color #15. Along with the fab lip was big lashes (of course) and serious contouring to catch the lights. For the highlight I used Face Ateliers shimmer in gold bullion. Because the photographer Sarah McCologan was using colored blue gels-which changes the overall look of the photo the emphasis on the makeup wasn’t about color but depth/contouring, proper makeup placement.

The surprise of the day were her parents dropping by to see their wonderful child at work. Two very proud and very supportive parents sat back and couldn’t help but beam about Dawn, and Dawn had nothing but sincere pride for her parents. They are survivors of Katerina and that should tell you how strong of a family they are. Her parents are two amazing and loving people who raised a dynamic, strong, beautiful and gifted child

I am so proud to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the Rolando Santana show. I was the shows beauty director, I keyed makeup, hair and nails and production. Gathering together the crew of over 30 people to make this show a beauty success can only be done with an amazing group of people. The sponsorship I was able to obtain was nothing less then phenomenal all high-end and incredible.

To create the no makeup-makeup look I used the luxurious makeup from I NUOVI-- a fabulous company out of Singapore soon to come to the United States. Not only did they give enough makeup for the models they gave enough makeup for every makeup artists. Each artist walked away with over $300 worth of makeup and they deserved every bit. I NUOVI was generous giving each makeup artist several foundations, blushes, eyeshadows, lipsticks and so many other products. The makeup was more tonal --it flowed so beautifully with Rolando's wonderful designs and didn't compete.

Hair products were provided by the fab people of Farouk the makers of Bio Silk and the worlds best flat iron the Chi. My hair artists had to create a slick precise ponytail . Farouk provided all Biosilk products, shampoos,conditioners, moouse, shine on spray strate and so many other great products. Every hair artists got to take home several products for their kits

It was an amazing day one that started with a 8 am meeting with the set up crew (without them nothing could have happened) They each received an Italy Hair Fashions product of their choice. They walked away with either a blow dryer or flat iron valued $150 each. It was fun being Oprah again and letting them know. Man, that Oprah has a great job. To see their faces when I told them what they were getting just filled my heart

I had a breakfast at my studio, STUDIO D I bellieve in feeding people can't have starving people--can we. The meeting was to discuss production duties, how to set up stations, who will be responsible for various duties, what is expected and what I was grateful for. My studio was an explosion of emptied boxes and products I looked like I was setting up shop. We gathered everything that was shipped and off to NYC we were . The hardest part of the whole morning was getting the car service to come with three cars to take us all and all of the products to the venues. There was so much product we filled up three empty trunks and several laps--now that's a lot of products

We arrived at The Griffin around 11:30 and set up began--the crew was amazing within an hour everything was set up mirrors, light, tables, chairs etc. All tables had products beautifully displayed for the beauty crew I'm a bit annal when it comes to presentation.. Around 1:15 the beauty crew began to arrive--no time for prolong talking just big hugs for my beauty crew followed with instructions and a big old thank you. The models began to arrive at 1:30 and it was on. Everything ran on time--told you I am annal :).

Once all settled in I showed the makeup artists "the look" I designed for makeup, Hair artist Owen Sandy and I showed the hair artists the ponytail I designed with Rolando. A simple ponytail isn't so simple when there are 30 models and every single ponytail must be placed precisely at the same place on the head and have hair attached

I finally made it to the Brooklyn Flea. A flea market held in Brooklyn NY that seems everyone from all around the world had been to but me. I've been in Brooklyn more then a year and never made it there. It took a friend of mine Miss Stephanie to suggest we go and off we went. It's literally a 20 minute walk away from the house. Its located in Fort Green, Brooklyn ( at a few locations and only on the weekends--you must check their schedule. http://www.brooklynflea.com/

I'd like to say its the typical flea market--but I can't. Be prepared for sticker shock--some of the products/vendors offered are quite expensive. A broken chest of draws--and I mean broke down--but a supposed-antique was $475. Now I've been to many flea markets and maybe I would hear prices of $47.50, $175.00 but $475 made this New Yorker step back--and yes keep-a-walking. Some vintage jewelry was priced around $300--I do not think so

There are some fun things --vintage jewelry for me was my goal The not-so-expensive kind but oh-so-pretty-- (btw don't know how vintage means the 90's but okay.) If you know what you're looking for you'll have a great time here. I was fortunate to be hanging with Stef, Miss fashion stylists so she knew what was worth what. My suggestion, do your homework before going to any place that sells vintage and know the value.

One of the great things about this market are the vendors. The vendors I had the pleasure of speaking with had a great knowledge of what they are selling. You get a mini history lesson--for me a little history lesson is always a good thing. Vendors were friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful--no hard sell and willingness to haggle I love a good haggle :) The typical clothing, vintage clothing, jewelry, furniture, tons of collectible, i.e phones, eye glasses, typewriters etc, food vendors, handmade jewelry the kind that accepts credit cards--we're not talking cheap-but people it was beautiful and they have a tremendous food court located in the back

So while we were there we came across this vendor AUSTRALIAN BODY & HAIR company AUSTRALIAN SCENT---oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo man
When you walk around their booth its this fresh clean smell that hits you first--and then you see these lovely products. Just because it says Australian doesn't mean black folks can't use the products. They have some of the most amazing body creams, hair creams, hand-made soaps & candles. I'm always looking for new products for my natural and I found one--Hot HAIR POMADE --I quickly bought. It gives shine without being greasy--and it just softened up my hair I was hooked. Nice people run this company--family owned by a husband and wife team--she Australian, he a New Yorker developed this products with the prospective of the land down-under. Natural, fresh, good for you and good for the environment. Love their saying NO SYNTHETICS..NO PROBLEM..NO WORRIES--now that's a good company

RED WANTING BLUE? WHAT'S THAT DESHAWN?

Over the summer I worked on a music video featuring a great band from Ohio. Red Wanting Blue, is a band of 5 musicians who have been around for over 10 years. We had fun in various locations, NY MD, Upstate NY and yep even STUDIO D--check out the behind-the-scences shots.

They will be an overnight sensation with 10 years of music under their belts. They are a real live band --who play instruments, actual sing on key and have loads of talent. Their sound is retro, but then totally today, they are a little rock, new country, with soul all wrapped up in one.

It was my honor to hang out with these talented guys--who endured the hottest days on record in polyester suits, with no sun coverage all to put together this video--and I'd like to add--never once complained. I have been fortunate to get an interview with Shana King product developer for Adesign Brushes. I asked her some questions you guys have been asking me over the years about the company. Here you go:

My favorite brushes are the foundation brushes. The pointed and flat foundation brushes. I find they do the job of sponges but they don't soak up the product which saves me money–love that! The flat blends so smoothly as does the pointed. I get some of the most beautiful finishes whether I am using a liquid or creme base. Why are they so damn good?

First and for most we use the highest grade of synthetic for our foundation brush and the design are all hand made. So MUA can and will feel the difference when using. Secondly, I designed the shapes to compliment the natural contour and shape of the face.

I was thrilled to get a sneak peak of some of the new brushes from Adesign at the Makeup Show this year. I am in love with the gel liner. Do you have any more new brushes coming out, any favorites you can tell readers about?

We have so many things launching late this year. 3 new brushes that include the gel liner, dual fiber finishing eye brush and a great crease brush, an 8 piece essential set as well as a mini skin care set.

Adesign is such a fabulous company with great products and a great set of people working for them You seem to cater to makeup artist what's the philosophy behind the brand Adesign?

As a new makeup artist I found this industry expensive–I still do. Does Adesign have any discount programs for up and coming makeup artists or specials pricing or promotions, if so how does a makeup artist apply ?

Since our brand is primarily for MUA, we feel that we have already priced the brushes very competitively although we often offer sales and special show discounts for customers on our email lists. Artists can also call the head office and give their credentials to one of our sales team members to receive wholesale pricing outside of tradeshows.

The number after the SPF (sunscreen) equals the amount of time you have in the sun times ten.

SPF of 30 x 10 = 300 minutes of sun protection then reapply. That's why the higher the number the better and longer you can hang out in the sun.

NEVER BAKE!--any discoloration (tan) is a sign of skin damage so be careful people

You never know where you'll be or sometime you might not know the team members you'll be working with. On this editorial shoot it took me to a funky chicken, peacock and, rooster farm on the edge of south jersey. There I met and worked with some fabulous people, did some fun and funky makeup and participated in a sing-a-long that you just had to be there. It was a fun filled amazing day , laughing working and thanks to Mrs M for some of the best food Ive had on set in a long time

PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND THE BUSINESS

I really wanted to touch on this to save you heartache. Once you decide to become a makeup artist several things happen

Your schedule changes dramatically
Your language changes dramatically
Your income changes dramatically

When this shift comes into your life there will be folks who are just not comfortable with it. Your mother may think you will be poor and destitute. Your husband doesn’t understand why you must work on this project for free. Your friends can’t flow with your hours and cannot understand why you just talked about the consistency of 4 different types of body lotions for an hour.

With my family and friends the question of how much money I made in the beginning would drive me to total frustration and to tears. They weren’t excited when I had just done the best shoot ever-- they wanted to know how much that shoot paid. I don’t know why when I finally decided to step out on my own and be self-employed this bought on barrage of invasive questions they never dared asked me when I was working in corporate America. I have never had so many people in my pocket before and it was too much to take

Now to their defense–I know it comes from concern, love and just plan trying to understand this business. After all, I just left corporate america, my benenfits and my salary behind to suddenly make no "real" money--I totally get that I do BUT dammmnnnn, must you really know how much the gig paid? And why must I justify why I’m doing what I’ve chosen as a career path every single time I mention my latest gig? I longed for the day they stopped asking me–or they stopped blowing off my latest victory with a–well you didn’t make any real money how serious can this career be kind-of-attitude

I wanted them to come take the journey with me–only to realize they were incapable. I wanted people to marvel in my new found love. I wanted them to love it because I loved it. I wanted them to keep up my spirits when I was down. BUT they were incapable because what was needed was an understanding that they lacked and I grew so tired of trying to explain.

So my advice is–please keep your money to yourself. I made the mistake of thinking I would be rolling in the dough –due to reports on what folks like Kevyn Aucion made at the time. I thought if I made just 1/10th of what he did I would be good to go–WRONG. So I went around quoting income ala Kevyn but little did I know it would take me years to get that 1/10th

Please know your income will most likely be very very very–one more, very, small in the beginning of your career and you will be working for free alot--”paying your dues” Keep the talk about income to the only person that counts–a significant other you share bills. You may have to do this part time if your salary is extremely important to your households survival. People who are not in this business cannot wrap their brains around, working for free, little pay for crazy hours, no medical benefits and definitely no pension. In the end it will just stress you out–and a stressed makeup artist isn’t good to anyone

Now several years later and after much hard work, many highs and some serious ass-kicking lows I have finally made it to the point where my friends and family –who doubted my decisions are now proud of me and they have stopped asking me those damn annoying questions. And yes I do get to have dinner with the girls when I can and I pay my bills.

So to you newbies out there I understand where you are and I wish for you perseverance, patients, love, and a tenacious spirit. Never give up, never stop. How will you ever see your dreams fulfilled.

FLY LOUNGE MAY 2010

Now with the makeup show come several events. I had the opportunity to go to the Fly Lounge party at TAJ and it was so much fun to see some old and new faces. There was a lot of my DC/VA/MD folks there—Hey Yall!!!!!!, some folks from the Bronx (my old home) and even photographer Keston Duke was on hand to take pictures for the event. Mr. Nene Leeks himself was there makeup artist Warren Bolden—I see the moon for him, and so many other fun bloggers and makeup artists.
