Thanks for the invite
THE MAKEUP SHOW NYC 2010 RECAP
So I went to the Makeup Show this year only Sunday and my-oh-my what goodies
As usual my favorites were there. GRAFTOBIAN—with lower prices then last year
ADESIGN Brushes always fabulous to see these great brushes—get ready for some new fabulous brushes, CINEMA SECRETS—a yeah—as you all know, but a little NAH :( because the pickings were slim. MAKE UP FOREVER had the predictable line around the corner for folks dying for their products and of course they should they’re fabulous, CROWN BRUSHES had the shoulder to shoulder crush at their booth—its like going to the once-a-year Barney's sale—you could come away a little bruised.

I got to meet my other sistah with a fro Miss Lori Taylor of SMASHBOX—she’s just a such a nice person, Danessa Myricks-I MAKEUP YOU BEAUTIFUL was there doing her thing with her sold-out class and her fabulous booth, my gurl Miss Brandlyn Fulton had a class on Monday introducing the new fabulous foundation colors for women of color from FACE ATELIER I told you all they were coming. I’m so glad you all waited the colors are fabulous. Now, I wasn’t there to hear Miss Fulton's presentation, but I know Miss Brandy, she did a great job. Raedawn Johnson up there working her magic for MEHRON. ALCONE had their usual goodies—I hope you all got your sponges and puffs. L’OREAL was there, giving away a nice bunch of products mascaras and some HIP products. Of course I headed on over to my favorite moisturizer EMBRYOLISSE—ahhhhh heaven, and the ladies at BECCA were just wonderful—I love lines that go from Black women to White and everything in between and Becca certainly does.
You guys know I am not an airbrush artist but I have to say OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE COSMETICS (OCC)- man is that name correct . OCC was doing its thing—they have fabulous products for us non- airbrushers and David is such a wonderful person—could I see me with an airbrush in my hands---hhhhhmmmmmm????—I really loved his products. It was nice to see SHU UEMURA there—I will say be prepared for anything you order to come months later instead of days. Last year I ordered several eyelash curlers I received my order 3 1/2 months later---hhhmmm,:( The fabulous folks at YABY Miss Liz and Miss D who was helping out had some great products and introduced their new foundations, but for me I was stuck on her highlighting kit—it was so sort-after, by the time I got to the booth to get mine she didn’t have the shades I wanted—talk about sold out—ka-ching :) , I hugged my folks at MAC but didn’t really see much that was new—they always have such fab art being done and it is pure skill.
My only downer was—where was all the free stuff—who doesn’t like free—I am I right people? hehehehe L’OREAL was the one giving away the most stuff. DINAIR gave away a few small samples but we all know I’m looking for the motherload-hahahahaha. Perhaps everyone was saving it for Monday but those who went on a Sunday sadly we missed out
Now admittedly I only went for the one day and to bring full disclosure I went for a half a day—had some stuff to do wish I could have stayed longer. I didn’t take a class nor sit in on any but I know from what folks have told me the classes as ususal were great. Product wise besides the new kid on the block INGLOT there wasn’t much new—in terms of big makeup companies. BUT WHO CARES-- It is always a fabulous event to go—to just see folks you haven’t in a while, or meet some new ones Thank you to Michael DeVallis and my assistant Belinda
Michael DeVallis and his crew did an amazing job again----wwoooooooo can’t wait for next year
WHAT DID YOU ALL THINK--Let me know

THE MAKEUP SHOW IS COMING--THE MAKEUP SHOW IS COMING!!!!!
Well THE MAKEUP SHOW NYC is here this weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! May 16& and 17th
For all of you who don’t know it’s a place where professional makeup artists come together for products and education. For the last few years I have been a featured educator but this year I just want to go and enjoy the show. There’s tons of classes tons of products. You must go and please people bring something to transport your makeup (an empty kit one that rolls makes sense), wear sneakers or flats, bring water and granola bars, and most importantly please move over when I get to the Crown Brush table—hehehehe I am a bit of a brush addict
Here are my FAVORITE-MUST STOP BY AND TRY
BRUSHES
CROWN BRUSHES usually located in the back and a must for inexpensive brushes. I do say stay away from powder brushes and blush brushes the hairs just wind up on your clients face—sheds like crazy. The best brushes are synthetic foundation brushes, synthetics, lip, eyeliner, eyeshadow brushes. Talk about cheap a lot of these brushes start at $1.50 and go up
ADESIGN—much more pricey but worth every penny—why? You’ll never have to worry about an adesign brush coming apart while your working, I can’t tell you how may times I’ve gestured with a brush and the head of the brush flies off—talk about embarrassing—ugh That doesn’t happen with adesign As much as I love a good cheap brush—makeup artist cannot live by cheap brush alone. For me it’s the feel of their brush in my hand that I love the way the makeup glides on, the fact that they just last. It’s built to last—all of their brushes are. My pick if you can’t afford a whole kit are the foundation brush—and the rounded foundation brush does the work of that pink sponge everyone raves about. I strongly suggest you go to the booth they usually have show specials and you won’t be disappointed
MAKEUP
BASE/FOUNDATIONS
CREMES
Yes, yes, yes, you know I’m going to say it
CINEMA SECRETS by Alcone—its my favorite and I have explained why before
Though we are talking about crème base please don’t leave without their brush cleaner
GRAFTOBIAN Love it great creme base. I have the warm color palette brought it last year still have over 70% in my kit. I little goes along way has a great semi matte finish—great for us high def people
LIQUID FOUNDATION/BASE
Make Up For Ever—HD Foundation—its just good people-all around great foundation but very very good for us TV people. Seems to inhibit shine—I’ve been using it on me –I’ve got say I’m an oily gurl and it does stay put. Don’t control oil but the makeup seems to stay put
Face Atelier—dewy, sexy a little goes a long way and now it has 4 new shades for women of color. How can you pass this line up now?
STORES
Alcone—NYC is an answer to a pro makeup artists dreams. It’s a little store that holds a lot of fabulouness. This booth normally carries their great sponges, puffs, spatula’s and steel palettes, various cosmetics, normally kits for concealers, lips, eyeshadows etc. They don’t bring everything in the store. After the show is over and you’re still here in NYC you still might want to drop by their store on 49th street between 9th and 10th ave
Another store like Alcone is the west coast version Nigel Beauty Beauty Emporium—they have a lot of what Alcone has but they also have some different items, cosmetics, bags, kits, etc Always worth stopping by
THE BEST MOSITURIZER—EVER!
EMBRYOLISSE
I know that’s a big claim but it is. It is the only thing in my kit with a scent, doesn’t set off anyone with an allergic reactions. I use it and I’m oily as hell and it does work, doesn’t clog pores etc. I can go on and on. The best—don’t leave without it—well leave me some :)
OTHER MAKEUP LINES
Yaby Cosmetics—great colors, great consistency and the owner is a wonderful person who deserves our support
Three Custom Colors—great kits great everything. My guy fellow makeup artist James Vincent just loves this :)
INGLOT—I will admit I have never seen this company before but keep hearing rave reviews. It’s one of the booths I’m headed to.
AIRBRUSHES
For the airbrush folks out there—I am not one of them
Either OCC or Kett. Each has it following--tons love OOC and their many other products while Kett also has it followers for their finish. The best thing about the show is you get to witness and try before you buy. Now that’s my kind of show
FREE STUFF
This year L’oreal and Smashbox will be there and they love giving away things—so get in line and get your free stuff
WEBSITES
How many times do I hear DeShawn I can’t afford a website—well now you can Go directly to WebPhoto Masters and tell them DeShawn sent you. It’s a great company and works great with makeup artist.
They have great guest speakers and classes—but don’t forget you now have Studio D to come to—of course I had to throw that in ;) http://www.deshawnhatcher.com/
Either way I want you to enjoy the show and just have a wonderful time amongst your fellow artists. Michael DeVellis has created a fabulous show for us to attend—so lets go have some fun AND SHOW OUR SUPPORT. I know I will. See you there!!!!

FASHION WEEK-Rolando Santana
This past fashion week I had the great honor of Keying the one and only Rolando Santana's 2010 Fall Fashion Show. His fashions can be found in Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus Nordstrom and many others across the country. His Fall collection had beautiful dresses, with sequins, beautiful blue dresses reminicents of Audrey Hepbrn in breakfast at Tiffanys, and two beautiful light trenches that I have down on my wish list. He makes me want to put on a dress and many folks who know me knows that ain't something I do -hehehe. The makeup I designed was a clean base light blush, with a light smokey eye and a glossy lip. I used Make Up Forever Products to achieve the look. My team were rockstars I was very fortunate I had them there. Issac my phenomenal hair artist and his team rocked that hair. Ill have more pics and possibly a cool little video for all you to see--but you've got to check back :)
PAR-TAY
OKAY THIS IS A FIRST--I ACTUALLY WENT TO A PARTY. Its official I left my house. DJ Kiss was having a fabulous party and I was thrilled to go and give her big old birthday hug. To make it even better my gurl Sarah, Miriam, Miss Jessie, Sae, and Damon the King of NY was there as well. It was a fun night and I am glad I left the house. Who knows maybe in another 5 years Ill do it again. Thanks Sarah for these pics. :)
PS--OH and John Legend was there along with Estelle--now that was a party

A few hours of my time
In January I had the fabulous job of working with some very cool entertainers, some of the members of the Phenomenal Handclap Band---who DeShawn? Why, The Phenomenal Handclap band silly—duhhhhhh (hahahahaha no just kidding). They are a funky 70’s sound meets 2010 rap, with a little folk, and a dash of underground soul band and they actually play instruments--what is that possible. They’re what their name proclaims Phenomenal. I did their makeup for the style section of AM Newspaper. The band members Daniel, Sean, Patrick, Luke, Laura, Joan and Peir were just wonderful to work with. The girls could be models so beautiful and just nice—wish all my folks were this nice—so it made my life easy. It was a couple of hours of my time in the meatpacking district NYC, shooting these fabulous musicians—not a bad way to spend the afternoon.

CREATIVITY AND THE KIT

What’s in your kit? I mean your entire kit. Do you know--have you used everything? Yes DeShawn!—really hhhmmmm? When was the last time you USED everything you have? That questions goes for makeup artists and you too ladies at home, we all know you have that makeup bag, drawer, closet hahaha.
Okay, I believe you if you say you’ve used everything but everything wasn’t great so it sits. Can you think of ways to use it. Ex. you’re stuck with a black eyeliner that wasnt great as an eyeliner. How about to fill in where the mascara didn’t reach—great especially on blondes, what about on eyebrows for a more dramatic effect—the latter is for makeup artist only—sorry ladies at home I can’t have you looking crazy :)
Makeup is expensive whether it comes from the drugstore or department store. Why have your makeup sitting in a drawer or in your kit being ignored—poor makeup. I am guilty of this myself. I have so much I literally put it in drawers and left it there. BUT NO LONGER!! I am coming out of my makeup rut and making myself stretch my mind and creativity by reaching into those drawers and actually using what it is I have. And you know it’s been pretty good. Different color combinations have just flowed from me and I know I am a better artist for the change
Switch up from the norm you’ll be amazed at what creativity comes through when you’re forced out of your norm. Hmmmm I wonder what you could do with that purple lip gloss?
Go forth and play—you’ll be happy you did. Then add makeup to your kit

Have you ever worked on a werewolf?....

These mascaras I just love and guess what ladies they all work. I have every single one of them and I'd buy all of them over and over
1.Covergirl Lashblast--not only do they have one of my favorite actresses as spokeperson (the lovely Drew Barrymore--god I just love her :) This mascara delivers what it says--volume intense, long buildable lashes. If you want the fake eyelash look keep applying layers--just be careful to comb out the lashes between layers they can get clumpy. Please note, the brush does take a few applications to get use to--very big spongy applicator with very short bristles. Not for anyone who already has long lashes you'd be better off using my number 2 choice
Price $9.99
2. Maybelline Lash Stylist--WHAT!!!! LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!! Unlike the Covergirl Lashblast this one has been around for years. Long lashes that somehow curl and you're left with these beautiful eye batting lashes. It isnt a volmizing mascara but it does give you length. The trick is that fabulous comb--OMG love it--did I say that already. Now if you have straight lashes like many of my wonderful latinas and asians ladies then you'll have to use an eyelash curler with any mascara you choose
Price $8.99
3. Mally Rancol--this mascara works like Covergirl and is also buildable, you will get thick long fake lashes with this when applied in layers. If you do have long lashes one coat will do and talk about black---oooooooo so black--love it. Order through QVC--I do believe that price is for two mascaras--check www.QVC.com for more details also available at Bloomingdales
Price $22.00
A RULE ON MASCARA
For my non makeup artist folk--a rule on mascaras
The only folks who shouldn't use black mascara are the very very very fair skinned ladies very pale blondes, and very pale redheads
To have a more natural look please pick up a black/brown or brown.
For makeup artist on set black mascara is the way to go-better for the camera :)
